Educate, Act, Impact.

Hi, my name is Amy and I am currently  a high school senior at Westlake High School in Austin, Texas. If you have any questions, concerns, or suggestion, feel free to contact me anytime: amyqin@gmail.com

Last summer, I decided to embark on a project that I am really interested and passionate about: soft drink consumption and how to reduce it. The reason why? Well, my thought process went something like this:

a. I’ve seen my good share of depressing documentaries about obesity in America and how diabetes is on the rise. In fact, considering genetics alone, I’ve got a 50% chance of getting type 2 diabetes. Along with environmental factors such as fast food, lack of physical exercise, and poor health choices, chances of getting diabetes and becoming obese are even higher in this day and age.

b. I recently also watched a video lecture by Dr. Robert H Lustig from UCSF called “Sugar: The Bitter Truth” and he explained very lucidly why sugar is the root cause for obesity today. The video encouraged me to think of ways myself and Americans could cut back on sugar, or what he calls, a toxin.

c. I found out that soft drinks are in fact the biggest source of refined sugars for people, and the average teen gets about 15 tbsp of it daily! The USDA recommends 6-12 tbsp of sugar in total daily.

d. And thus, all of this led me to think: If we just cut back on soft drink consumption, we would be consuming around 10 tbsp less sugar each day, along with all of those extra calories! It’s the easiest way to cut back on sugar, since it doesn’t require any lifestyle upheavals or anything, just to stop drinking a certain type of drink.  One small change can have such a big impact.

So with sugar as the common denominator for all metabolic disorders (heart disease, diabetes, hypertension, etc.), I think it is crucial that individuals act now to reduce our consumption through cutting back our consumption of soft drinks.

I’m starting this blog as a base for education and spreading the word about obesity, sugar, and soft drinks and then hopefully, I’ll be able to spread awareness. I’ll be posting articles, facts, and basically, the hard truth about soft drinks here. However, I wouldn’t only want to sit here at my computer telling people what to do, I want to actually go out a do something. I’m hoping to use this blog as a catalyst to galvanize real change, further spread awareness, and impact peoples’ lives.
